The other thing I find amazing in 2021 is how little we know about the microbiome in general, and especially in weird environments like clouds and very deep under the ground, even though those might teach us about the origin of life.

I happened to be staying at the same hotel as an icthyologist who was doing meta analysis of fish discovery rates. His conclusion was that we've discovered essentially all of the living fish species. There might be a small handful more, and then tons of minor variants.
