I also like the Soviet approach of packing Gagarin's capsule with oxygen and sandwiches in case the retrorocket thing didn't work out, and he had to wait a week or two for the orbit to decay. It harnesses the deep Slavic instinct to overprovision all departing passengers.

Another thing I hadn't realized is that there wasn't consistent communication with space capsules until Apollo. NASA sent young college grads to places like Zanzibar with a teletype and hoped for the best. Gagarin spent half his orbit trying to ask Moscow if he was going to die
