This is a good review of the iMac that catches the fact that Apple's design isn't elegant at all once you add all the necessary dongles. Apple now is like the Sony Vaio used to be in the 2000's—gorgeous until you plug in all the stuff it needs to workhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/06/16/apple-imac-thin/ …

The designers at Apple should be forced to work on desks three inches deep and subsist on a diet of angel hair pasta until they get over the pointless fixation on thinness over functionality.

Correcting this earlier tweet. The peripherals that ship with the iMac charge via a cable that fits the device, but if you order a trackpad separately, you do get a USB-A charging cable that does not fit the computer. Ask me how I know!pic.twitter.com/KalCaOShVT

The USB-C situation is a disaster, but I understand that Apple refuses to go back to USB-A. So the company should compromise and ship its next generation of computers with USB-B.

If hired at Apple, I promise to take the hardware in two exciting new directions for 2022: 1) Replace all USB ports with a high voltage Apple alternative that looks just like a headphone jack 2) Add screws to the MagSafe connector so it can be securely attached to the computerpic.twitter.com/tqooDp7dg2

I mean it’s a layup for a “revolutionary change” down the line to just add them back in…

No way! I love gently arranging my dongle so it doesn't snap off in the port. And my special 2 plug USB stick. And the cold sweat that breaks out when I might need to get something on an SD card.

Entering the third decade of reading this take and Apple is still on top, how do they do it

I have a beautiful Macbook Pro which is the absolute envy of the clients I talk to. It's a model from 2017 but very much The Laptop. This all ends when I grab the yellowing, fringy and/or unwieldy USB dongles and HDMI adapters I need to make the thing actually work.

The memory isn’t “soldered in,” it’s part of the SOC. I think replaceable / non-integrated RAM isn’t likely to be a thing in the future until you get to workstations that need 32 GB or more. Even then the first 16 GB will probably be right on the package

I appreciate the sentiment, but they have a long history of doing exactly this: removing extraneous or outdated ports/drives, getting slammed for it, and most people happily adapting to wireless alternatives. VGA? Ethernet? iPhone headphone jack? DVD? I don’t miss any of them.

Many people do miss the headphone jack, and it's been years since Apple went to USB-C and promised us the industry would follow. You could make the same argument about a physical Escape key—every design misstep is supposedly a change for the better that we have to get used to.
