One thing I like about the history of natural philosophy is that it sorted people into a continuum of pedantry from physics to applied math to abstract logic, and that the people digging at the deepest foundations of it all discovered the whole edifice was standing on nothing

(2) The cosmological constant problem (your 120 orders of magnitude) is widely considered to be one of the biggest theoretical problems in fundamental physics. Any “hand waving” is just a stand-in for “we don’t understand this but here are some things we can discuss anyway”.
