"Racially-tinged" has become widely mocked as a journalese circumlocution for simply "racist", so it's interesting that "race-conscious" still gets a pass.pic.twitter.com/DTA0j02Ico

My third grade teacher explained racism to us as "people shouldn't be treated differently based on the color of their skin", which I thought made a lot of sense. I don't know if the current definition of racism, full as it is of epicycles, is explainable at all to a third grader.
I thought the addition of the privilege conversation worked really well when that became popular ~5 years ago. But of course this whole thing needs to be a treadmill of changes in order for public speakers or "thought leaders" to keep selling books/speech tickets/etc, soooo...
I thought so too. Also explainable to a third-grader and a great concept to have. But it's also been Tumblrized into something extremely complicated and suspiciously similar to original sin.
Yes, exactly. As someone who grew up Catholic, this whole "You were born bad, you'll always be bad, I can kind of help you if you follow these badly defined and contradictory rules, oh and also give us money, don't forget the money" thing is extremely familiar.
The difference I find striking is that unlike religion, there's no pathway out! There's no Jesus to forgive you, the best outcome you can hope for is to be an unproblematic and deferential Ally. It's white supremacy with the sign flipped, with no hope of redemption
