Curious what the largest grain of salt sold at the Wuhan market is, so I can take it with Daszak's tweet. We know frozen anything is not a vector for covid, the paper itself says pangolins weren't sold, and somehow this key research from 2019 fortuitously emerges in June 2021. https://twitter.com/PeterDaszak/status/1401908087557177353 …

Really—why is Daszak bringing up pangolins here at all? Even this serendipitously discovered paper points out their absence. Leave the pangolins alone.pic.twitter.com/uxyIPzhlv1

For my money, this is the best part of the paper. "Hello, fellow merchant. I am an independent observer unconnected with law enforcement. Please provide me with a list of the illegal animals you are selling (and your written consent!) so that I may publish it in two years' time."pic.twitter.com/HLRWsIGWOY

Useful context thread from @BeijingPalmer. This very natural reflex to obfuscate is why I find Daszak's aggressive defensiveness more interesting than the sudden appearance of the Chinese researchhttps://twitter.com/BeijingPalmer/status/1401934598574067713 …

anyone proposing obfuscation and paranoia and cover-up as strong evidence that China is hiding something deadly serious has to consider that Chinese institutions evidence obfuscation and paranoia and cover-up about issues such as staff holiday times

So Daszak was instrumental in an earlier effort to shut down inquiry about Covid origins. No wonder the guy instablocks:https://twitter.com/alexandrosM/status/1401813071635501056 …

The Lancet letter of Feb 18, 2020, sent a message to scientists the world over: Investigate a lab leak, and you will be tarred as conspiracy theorist. Was it a honest outpouring of support? Or astroturfing? To start, of the 27 signatories, 7 were affiliated with EcoHealth... 🧵 pic.twitter.com/XTyTB3CeyD

To be clear about where I stand: I think it's possible to be genuinely in the dark about how the pandemic started, absent further evidence, and also find these efforts to pre-empt investigation fishy as hell.

I miss the early days of the pandemic, when I could have full faith in the WHO, CDC, Nature, and the Lancet instead of having to feel like a foil-hatted wingnut who has to assemble the real story from random tweetspic.twitter.com/6waAYfDdlO

More Daszak-adjacent fishiness here. Again, whatever weird thing is going on here does't prove or disprove any covid origin hypothesis. But it's really weird just as a standalone phenomenon. What's with all the dissembling?https://twitter.com/ontweeterdotcom/status/1403772241981083648 …

There's a long video of these two sitting side by side on stage at the event so it's not a question of memory. I suppose the next step is Maxmen can claim her account got hacked when she denied knowing the guy.

Basically there's been an orchestrated effort to attack the lab leak line of inquiry, where the participants have been pretty eager to hide that they're working together. And none of this is happening in China, so we don't have to pearl-clutch about whether to investigate it

Why can't we just have an ordinary pandemic where the world races to find a cure and then take it when it's found, and there's not 19 layers of stupid at every step of the process

Yet another twist in the Daszak story. He has been one of the people most active in attacking lab escape scenarios, and gone to some lengths to disguise those efforts. https://twitter.com/niubi/status/1407318970894589952 …
