I love that the FBI, which has been campaigning for some kind of key escrow for years, finally ran out of patience and just built the app itself. But this is also a thing you can only do oncehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/06/08/fbi-app-arrests-australia-crime/ …

Looking forward to the next big reveal that "Bitcoin" was a multi-year sting operation

This event made me think of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EncroChat . The temptation for a convenient messaging app is just too high.

It would seem that Australian police lured criminals into using an FBI-controlled "secure" app for their comms by feeding stories to the press to make it look like all the cool gangsters were doing it. https://twitter.com/NewshubBreaking/status/1401992435362799618 … pic.twitter.com/tKAbyoC1Yt

That you can only *reveal* once. No way to know if there was more than one honeytrap app. And now, nobody can trust the confidential app that they’ve been using. What’s its provenance?

Puts an interesting perspective on all the *other* things they say they can't reveal because they need to preserve "sources and methods". Why is this, of all things an exception?

Is it, though? Revealing the existence of wiretaps didn't stop people from talking about doing crimes over the phone, it's just too convenient. But maybe the FBI is going to need to invest in their growth hacking capabilities.

I suppose the obvious solution is a combined encrypted messaging/crypto grift. "Yes, this messaging app just appeared from unclear provenance but on the other hand, you get a free NotTheFBICoin with every message you receive."

I can’t understand why a criminal would decided to use some random overnight messaging app instead of something like Signal, that’s open source, been around forever, and extremely popular. Or at least Wickr. Or even better would be something PGP based

“Those apps are all fine, but they only have consumer grade encryption, you see. This app here on the other hand has criminal grade level capabilities, and if you pay a little extra you can even upgrade to crime boss level, but you need to be recommended by another boss first”
