Watching my computer-intimidated mom struggle with the disappearing scrollbars on a Mac desktop is filling me with rage at Apple. Why does it require a click frenzy and wild mouse waving to have basic UI elements appear?

I remain surprised that nobody has made an operating system designed for older, less tech literate people - an AOL, as it were. Really feel it trying to help my in-laws with stuff - dealing with updates, constant changes, etc, genuinely hard.

seems like an argument for iOS on every platform/iPad as computer replacement

Even iOS makes baffling UI changes seemingly at random when you update. Safari moved bookmarks and "request desktop site" recently. What's needed is fixed UI choices with long term security support.

Yeah, the UI stability is key. A lot of the problem is conceptual, distinguishing between what's a website and what's local storage and a notification and a shortcut and the 439 other forms of modal state that a modern Apple UI has. Let people learn it and have it stay learnt.
