Publicly funded by taxes from a robust capitalist economy! It's capitalism all the way down, I'm afraid

"robust capitalist economy" My dude, real wages have stagnated for my entire lifetime and most people in my generation will never be able to own a house

An entire economic and ideological alternative to capitalism died in my lifetime because it wasn't able to provide for people's most basic needs. So I'm always going to be a fan of capitalism, where shoes fit and the toilet paper at least doesn't hurt to use

This narrative is absurd. Only ideologues fall for it. The "communists" were anything but. Communism was a cover story for authoritarianism. But also, communism is not socialism. Conflating them is another disingenuous act by apologists for capitalism.

This is the No True Scotsman defense for the failures of communism. You should also remember that modern authoritarian socialism was invented as an excuse for why communism wasn't showing up on schedule.

"This is the No True Scotsman defense for the failures of communism." Answer me this, clearly: was the Soviet Union a stateless society with workplace democracy in which all industries were controlled by the workers who participated in it?

Of course not. It was a nightmare dictatorship, as were all other attempts to reach that goal.

"Of course not." So it was neither socialist nor communist, then.

That's the entire argument—that all attempts at creating communism lead inevitably to despotism. You can argue against it by saying "but we never had communism, so you can't criticize it", but it misses the point quite spectacularly.

"that all attempts at creating communism lead inevitably to despotism" Meanwhile, we have vastly worse and vastly more permanent despotism under capitalism.

Only true if you get 15 years in the camps (rather than 10) for that tweet.
