In 1960 you had a strong basis to believe we were heading for routine space travel, the eradication of disease, and either world government or nuclear war. How none of these came to pass and we got Pepe memes instead is a testament to the power of the future to remain surprising
Of course not. It was a nightmare dictatorship, as were all other attempts to reach that goal.

"Of course not." So it was neither socialist nor communist, then.

That's the entire argument—that all attempts at creating communism lead inevitably to despotism. You can argue against it by saying "but we never had communism, so you can't criticize it", but it misses the point quite spectacularly.

It's a fundamental error to think we can learn much about the general value of socialism—or communism—based on doomed historical attempts. To get to pure socialism from capitalism requires change. Revolution is change, but it is dysfunctional. Other means may exist, untried.

Revolution would certainly be better than just blithely allowing millions to die each year because "let's try reforming capitalism again, it didn't work the twenty-fifth time we tried it, but maybe this time's the charm!"
