It's super interesting that transatlantic flight is slower in 2020 than it was in 1960. Approximately 0/100 people would have predicted this at the start of the Jet Age, just like none of us thought in 2000 we'd end up using slower computers with less memoryhttps://twitter.com/jonostrower/status/1401586209873305602 …

On the other end of the transatlantic travel spectrum is this slow aircraft. At Mach .79, you’ll probably end up with an extra hour of sleep crossing the pond. (That comes with added costs, too) The XLR & Overture are strategically different in every way possible. https://twitter.com/FlightGlobal/status/1401584862340030468 …

The Boeing 707 flew lower and at a higher Mach number than modern jets, both of which increased its absolute speed. That we lived through the S-curve of aviation technology and still made silly predictions based on extending Moore's Law many decades into the future is on us

I gave a whole talk on this once (https://idlewords.com/talks/web_design_first_100_years.htm …). If you'd like me to give more talks, buy me a ticket (on a fast plane) and I'll go talk again. I enjoy writing these things

In 1960 you had a strong basis to believe we were heading for routine space travel, the eradication of disease, and either world government or nuclear war. How none of these came to pass and we got Pepe memes instead is a testament to the power of the future to remain surprising

You have a vaccine in your username that was developed by capitalism

It is absolutely a massive failure of capitalism that the recent breakthrough in mRNA vaccines came out of emergency public funding. Trillions in private capital investments have failed to produce anything as useful.

The development of the first mRNA vaccine was pretty much funded 50/50 by the German government and private companies. Sounds like a good collaboration between public and private to me.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfizer%E2%80%93BioNTech_COVID-19_vaccine#Funding …

Not everything is black and white. Concepts of capitalism and concepts of socialism can work together if you have a well regulated market (which isn’t the case in the US). You can see those social market economies work pretty well in European countries or Japan.)

I think of capitalism as more like a glorified lifehack than a full-on ideology. It's like a motor for economic activity, you still need to put stuff around it (like brakes, a muffler, catalytic converter, seat belts) to make it serve people. So I fully agree with you here

No, capitalism is a system of exploitation, and this is easily demonstrable in the fact that in a period of unprecedented economic expansion and deregulation, poverty and misery are increasing and regular people aren't seeing any benefits.

Indeed, capitalism is intentional policy of Enclosure to force the common people to work for the rich, as the working class, and this is how they spoke about it:pic.twitter.com/fziEHDpbWn

I absolutely believe you can have strictly regulated markets that serve some good purposes, incentivize some risk-taking etc. But it's the idea that society's priorities should mostly be steered by private capital that has got to go.

Exactly. You let capitalism drive the market, but you don’t let capitalism drive your social policies. Similarly, you let your government regulate the market, but you don’t let it dictate the market.
