I understand the deference normally given to virologists in talking about virology, but I think that deference is misplaced when it comes to investigating whether the field they devoted their lives to is responsible for what happened. You can't expect impartial answers there.

Labs in China are run differently than those in the west. Accidents over there would reflect failure of their system, not the field as a whole.

That depends entirely on the nature of the hypothetical failure. Lab accidents as a general matter are routine everywhere.

Accidents are unavoidable. Reflective cover-ups that ultimately make things worse, far likelier to occur in China than anywhere else.
