This reminds me of the many prominent anti-trust scholars and activists who write up their work on the company using Google docs. The issue is not hypocrisy, but a lack of seriousness about what is potentially a highly adversarial relationship.

Metadata is a much bigger security and privacy issue than many think and this really can't be encrypted/zero knowledge of by a service provider. The whole thing is dependent entirely on trust.

Google and similar cloud providers would never use admistrative access for corporate gain. There are audit and security systems to prevent that. I know. I maintain some of those systems.

This attitude is in line with Google's definition of privacy—that private data should stay between you and Google. Whether other people share your faith in corporate probity and the sanctity of internal controls is ultimately up to them to decide.
