I've talked about Boom previously as a technology for letting plutocrats break your windows remotely at scale. The ultimate goal is supersonic business jets so the Epsteins of this world don't have to tap their foot impatiently to get to private islandshttps://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1141556993288572928 …

I gave a nice talk once about why aviation (which had been on an exponential tear) stalled out when it got to supersonic airliners, and the implications of that for our own industry, where we are in a bit of denial about the end of Moore's Law and friends https://idlewords.com/talks/web_design_first_100_years.htm …

FYI: NASA Low-Boom Flight Demonstrationhttps://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/lowboom/overview …

That research is the bait part of the regulatory bait-and-switch I was referring to. (The research is real, but Boom is not building one of these)

Lessons yet to be learned from X-59 could help make commercial supersonic flight more flexible/feasible, but the demonstrator probably won't see flight until late next year... so, there's that?
Won't really help Boom, depending on how far along they are. -
Boom used that research in its early pitches but all the subsequent prototypes show none of that design incorporated.

What odds would you give on them ever manufacturing a plane that gets certified as a business jet or airliner?
-
10:1 against, 100:1 against entering commercial service

I’m also curious how exactly they’re net carbon zero. The most fuel efficient planes are jumbo jets with massive turbofans going only slightly faster than their minimum cruising speed. Small and fast has the worst fuel consumption per unit of capacity

I'm going to guess they're net carbon zero by buying offsets from some other YC racket
