The thing I really enjoy about non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and "smart contracts" more broadly is that there's no way to get them to point to information or objects outside the blockchain without introducing a trusted third party, the whole thing you set up a blockchain to avoid.

I hope whoever taught the kind of people who were flipping homes in 2007 about hash functions has their life savings on the blockchain

I think I'm angriest about NFTs because it's a kind of low-volume bookmarking that makes other people rich

so salty and just blatantly unaware and not curious of use cases of NFTs. Sad to see people I respect in traditional tech dinosauring themselves. -

You too can spend real money through an elaborate web of costly transfers to claim a row in a ponderously slow append-only database which links to a jpeg you have no rights to. This supports artists.

Worth pointing out that the video games industry - where virtual economies and item trading between players are common yet expensive problems - has not yet found a use for crypto, despite several publicised and not-so-publicised attempts over the years.

It kind of makes sense that they wouldn't, since multi-player video games almost by definition are centralized (one entity runs them) and so grafting a trustless decentralized system onto an arrangement where you have an efficient trusted party makes little sense
