I’m no expert (I’m not that kind of political scientist) but my best guess would be sort-of-demand-driven - that there is a pretty strong base (especially among activists) who want the crazy, but also a significant chunk along for the ride without buying into the full package.

It'll maybe be helpful to see how the changes in voting in Alaska affect this, as a crude test for understanding how much of this is a product of everyone buying the full package of insanity, and how much the result of some crazy combined with standard primary/FPTP dynamics.
