How China feels about the investigation, or the fact that someone got called fat on Twitter, should really have not have any bearing on figuring out how a global pandemic started. Shame on Nature for publishing this.

There's a lot of people trying to reach a theoretical answer on the origins of covid by solving multivariate equations in racial calculus (is it worse to accuse people of eating bats or mismanaging a research center?) But the virus doesn't care a whit about our politics.

That's not what it says at all. It says advocacy of a theory absent actual data is detrimental to both uncovering the facts and international collaboration. It's in favor of experts continuing to investigate and maybe less in favor of folks hashing this out in Twitter.

Advocacy of a theory absent data is exactly what we've had in the animal crossover hypothesis so far. This article is a rehash of the "X will offend China so we must not do X" argument, and has no place in a scientific publication
