My interest in the story is not about where the virus came from, but in the hot mess of policing dissent on these sites through censorship. I think we can all agree we went from "this is a harmful conspiracy theory" to "this is an open question" in one weird lurch.

It's partially just a matter of language. Trump and his political adherents would mention lab release, which implies intentionally unleashed plague, bioweapon style, more often than they would mention lab escape or leak, which would be a utilitarian accident.

Also, for what it's worth, the symptoms of COVID-19 are virtually identical to generic winter respiration diseases. All care in China happens in hospitals, especially in larger cities (even stuff like refilling your prescription meds), PCPs or polyclinics are not common there.
