I get that regulatory capture sucks, but you can defeat this evil corporate villain by multiplying a number by 0.92 by yourself instead of paying TurboTax hundreds of dollars to do it. Empowering!

OK, but still - if they already know what you owe, why make us all go through the motions of recalculating this? Why not just tell us what we owe and then we only have to start doing math if they screw up?
-
Yeah, that part is infuriating for sure. They should send you the completed return based on their records for signature and corrections (if any)

I did my taxes by hand the week before my wedding. I made several very simple arithmetic mistakes that essentially doubled what I owed. The IRS sent me a nice little letter explaining my mistakes along with a check, in less than a month.

If they send you a check like that and you don’t cash it, they will send you another one when that check expires. Don’t ask me how I know this.

Yeah but nobody knows that because Intuit also runs ads that portray manual filing as complicated and high risk. I want everyone to save that $100 and personal tax preparers to be salted earth for their behavior.
