The social norm around mask use in Japan and many other East Asian countries is pretty great—you put one on if you feel under the weather or want to be considerate of others in cold/flu season, and there's no stigma or political valence attached to wearing or not wearing them.

The mask mandate in the US was so badly bungled that this useful norm (making mask use an uncontroversial option in cold and flu season) is probably out of reach.

Many of us lucky enough not to get the covid also had the experience of not getting a cold or flu for the past year, and that was pretty great. But the political polarization meatgrinder means we can't have nice things, everything has to split along lines of identity

Yeah, this is a good point. Masks are probably going to become a fire season staple in the American west.https://twitter.com/babosport1/status/1392915148847808520 …

Mildly ironic because there are concerns that they may do more harm than good for smoke inhalation.https://www.sfgate.com/california-wildfires/article/N95-mask-wildfire-smoke-are-they-safe-14560537.php …

Masks do more harm than good... where did I hear that before?

Sure, but if you read that article and the many others like it, there is nothing about "saving the masks for first responders." Instead, there are legitimate concerns about how improperly worn N95s can cause more smoke inhalation than no masks at all.

I understand. My point is there was identical language around improperly worn masks giving people a false sense of security with covid. This may be true, but my skepticism is way up with regard to these arguments

Yeah, I get it. The one upside with smoke is you quickly get a pretty clear signal of bad fit! If you start to feel like shit, immediately take off the mask and go sit next to a HEPA filter indoors.

Yeah, that's a good point. At least the smoke is palpable. Longer-term I hope indoor filtered air becomes ubiquitous in California

I do believe domed cities will happen before/instead of preventing the actual fires.
