The social norm around mask use in Japan and many other East Asian countries is pretty great—you put one on if you feel under the weather or want to be considerate of others in cold/flu season, and there's no stigma or political valence attached to wearing or not wearing them.

Sure, but if you read that article and the many others like it, there is nothing about "saving the masks for first responders." Instead, there are legitimate concerns about how improperly worn N95s can cause more smoke inhalation than no masks at all.

I understand. My point is there was identical language around improperly worn masks giving people a false sense of security with covid. This may be true, but my skepticism is way up with regard to these arguments
