One thing I genuinely like about the US tax system is that you can just say "hurr durr I'm a company", or that you're 30 companies for that matter, and the IRS will say "lol ok" without paperwork. And then they correct your tax math for you if you get it wrong, with little drama.

Trying to explain to German customers' accountants that I don't have a VAT number, compliance officer, triple-countersigned certificate of permission to operate a bookmarking concern, or even any pants on is the favorite part of my job.

I don't even attempt to submit the "invoice" you produce because the tax office would just laugh hysterically at me for those. Not just because of the VAT ID, but... pretty much everything about it :D

Someday I want to see a True German Invoice™ just to know how far I have left to go

Also, the actual invoice I would have to send you would be German - my software has a (horribly implemented, as you can see) "english" version, but that's not really legally binding whatsoever as far as I understand it.

Oh wow, that's neat. That explains why German clients get mad at me for not having their address on the invoice, and then get mad at me again when I suggest putting a textarea on there so they can edit it themselves.

Having the full address of both vendor and customer on it is an absolute requirement, yeah. But to be fair, submitting your 39 dollars invoice is... just not really worth it...

It's a funny collision of values. I try to minimize the info I collect and I absolutely don't want to know my customers' address. But it means they're not getting that sweet tax deduction.

There's some irony to be found in the fact that we make everyone's life super hard because of GDPR, and at the same time force everyone to collect addresses and contact details to legally make business. :)
