I vividly remember my first impressions of Sesame Street: 1. This writing system makes zero sense 2. These kids are way older than me and they can't read. Americans must be pretty slow I respected Mr. Rogers, but Sesame Street gave me the confidence to scorn this country early.https://twitter.com/NPR/status/1391442676638179332 …

When I got to Kindergarten I was widely taunted for liking a "baby show." I was like... "But... But Muppets?" At that point I was watching for entertainment (Muppets rock)

It's on in the middle of the day on weekdays. It definitely wasn't targeted at elementary school age kids.

I definitely didn't watch Sesame Street when I was as old as eight; I had graduated to Electric Company and 3-2-1 Contact by then. But the kids' TV landscape has changed a lot in the past forty years, especially since Congress passed the e/i mandate.

There's no a accounting for parents. Most PBS affiliates, however, air it very late in the morning, when k-12 kids would be expected to be in school, not at home in front of the TV. https://www.pbs.org/parents/shows/sesame-street/about …pic.twitter.com/jXqIh7OnSO

I'm dubious. Did they mean that educationally or emotionally? The school experience in the US is weirdly traumatic when you also consider what home life is often like, so I can see a remark like that being sincere if a Sesame Street character were a source of comfort.

Sesame Street works on many levels. The educational content is pre-school, the social lessons work through early grade school. By about 9 or 10, it's a utopian sociological project. It's diversity propaganda. The idea that there's a place where every freak is welcome digs deep.

It's moved down over the years - initially targeted at 5-to-8-year-olds, but now more consciously focused on 3-5.

And to an extent, I suspect that the letter-and-number stuff was always a way to be called educational when the real goal was modeling a diverse environment and social behavior.
