Covid, for all its horrors, was a starter pandemic. We got lucky that it was an ambitious cold and not something deadlier. We got lucky that it spared kids and was controllable with masks. But it exposed institutional failures that we can't allow to persist into the next pandemic

I wonder how much of this was affected by the responses and behavior of The Last Administration™. How much of the messaging was corrupted by needing to push back against them? For chrissake, we couldn't talk about China's culpability because they'd turn it into xenophobia.

And just as now we can't say that if vaccinated ppl all stopped masking but unvaccinated 100% mask indoors/close, numbers would continue to fall. But if we say that, Those People™ would just lie and not wear a mask either.
