I used to think that some outside event might intervene, and reset the situation. But one lesson of covid that I don't think was sufficiently absorbed was that even direct physical danger—hundreds of thousands dead—was not enough to impose a shared public reality. Very scary.

Or maybe you can reform this system where 20% of the population gets half the representation and get closer to some kind of democracy.

That would demand entrenched players to diminish their own power within the system and/or otherwise take positions that they perceive would put them at odds with their constituents. Or a crisis to render the system irrelevant. That seems more likely.
