Taking writing advice from John Swartzwelder is a little like taking grooming advice from Brad Pitt. There is no question that it's magnificent advice! But it is going to be of limited utility to most of you enthusiastically passing it around today.

The part about writing a really terrible initial draft and then rewriting it into something great is like Michelangelo saying to just chip away at the marble until all the parts that don't look like David are gone. It's not really advice about working hard and persevering, people

Sure but I think it amounts to “get something down on paper, don’t worry so much as you do it.” Stephen King makes the same recommendation l. Neither is promising you’ll get their results. It’s still good advice.
