The one thing I will never love about Hong Kong is how its 400,000 domestic workers—overwhelmingly women from Indonesia and the Philippines, and required by law to live where they work—are treated as somehow less than human.https://twitter.com/LauraWestbrook/status/1388369890331947011 …

The "don't tear gas our pets" rally in Hong Kong got big turnout, but barely anyone came out in support of an Indonesian domestic worker who was being deported for committing journalism. It was the only sparsely-attended protest I saw in HK. It sucks.https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1203209668857868288 …

The average 2019 protest was posted just a few days in advance, with thousands of people showing up. This one was planned well in advance, had numerous speakers, a stage, sound support, literature tables, and (generously) hundreds of attendees.

It was a real bummer. I know that treating domestic helpers as invisible can be psychologically helpful when you live together in a small space, but I hope this attitude changes in the future.
