Can you describe, in your opinion, exactly what the nature of the fuckup is (and whether we know enough to judge it)? I’m asking because from what I currently know, this doesn’t add up.

I think it was a fuck up to post the policy publicly and it read like the founders had not consulted with an expert to be a little more level headed about what the impact could be. There are ways to diffuse political talk and focus on work while maintaining inclusion and safety.

The ‘No Politics On The Work Chat’ policy publicly? Is the implication that it would’ve been better to post the policy privately and let it inevitably leak?

The original post was "no politics at basecamp" before the furious series of edits.

My impression is that he changed it from a fairly opinionated impassioned text to standard corporate policy. Is the new policy, or even the fact that it’s been corrected (for clarity or otherwise) a strong signal to leave at probability p=0.3? My best judgement is that it isn’t.

Yeah I don't think the text itself is really bad, but that it's a potentially a big thing if you actually drank the koolaid in the first place. (and also the "shut up and get back to work" but in public is just a mega stupid way to deal with criticism of management.

I kinda wonder if you decided to offer a good buyout package to all your employees, what percentage of the company would just take it.

I think that’s exactly what’ll make it to textbooks - nothing else is measurable. Is there any explanation behind the choice of 6 months?

If you're good and were thinking of upgrading job anyway, you leave. If you're ambitious and seeing a smaller pond to be a big fish in, you stay. If you're in the middle and you see the good people leaving and the gits staying... hmmm... decisions!

Not very persuaded by this analysis. I'm a horrible employee and I would have jumped at six months' severance.

I never did. But I could also never hold down a job.
