There is clarification later in the thread that this is primarily about communication in company channels, which I find very interestinghttps://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1387118917080915971 …

The work culture at rich tech companies (people read something upsetting in the news and want to discuss and 'process' it on company time) is so alien from most people's experience of work that it makes me despair for ever finding common ground with the actual working class

My first jobs were on construction sites, which always had a radio going. Some trades listened to conservative talk radio. Most just had music in the background. But these were all 'company spaces' in the same sense that the slack and Teams conversations are company spaces

I can think of several times where something that came up on the radio was a topic of discussion throughout the day. I think @Pinboard hits on something, but I also think that the idea is a bit ahistorical.

It's one thing to say 'don't talk politics in email,' but when the *entire office* is a virtual space, I believe it is a completely different ballgame.

I think the difference is significant. What you talk about around the radio on a job site doesn't get transcribed and permanently saved to a management-controlled server. Having a Signal backchannel or something would be a different ballgame, and much more like what you describe

I concur! But man, I think about the risk I would be taking if I started something like that - it would be easy grounds for termination if management got wind that it existed

This is part of something I call "ambient privacy". What used to be easy and the default state of things (talking to coworkers out of the boss's hearing) is now something risky that you'd have to carefully engineer, and the default is monitoring

Incredibly compelling and succinctly described. I would then almost expect to see a corporate endorsement of a platform for sensitive/watercooler conversations, because broad lack of “ambient privacy” would mark a huge shift in both corporate culture and corporate liability
