The work culture at rich tech companies (people read something upsetting in the news and want to discuss and 'process' it on company time) is so alien from most people's experience of work that it makes me despair for ever finding common ground with the actual working class
Well, it absolutely is in a way that watercooler chat is not. It leaves a permanent searchable record, potentially exposes the company to liability, is visible to management, and so on. If it's on company chat it's not an ephemeral thing between employees anymore

If people standing by the watercooler are being noticeably disruptive or going so far as to create liability, managers have always had to step in and deal w/ the individuals involved. Including even non-disruptive grown adults in a gag rule is super paternalistic.
