The work culture at rich tech companies (people read something upsetting in the news and want to discuss and 'process' it on company time) is so alien from most people's experience of work that it makes me despair for ever finding common ground with the actual working class

I’m not sure I follow your point. I just wanted to highlight that people are probably no less productive when they can process these issues openly and feel supported by their colleagues, even if they spend less *time* working. -
You don't get promoted at Google unless you join an affinity group for your specific minority and spend lots of time on the mailing list complaining about how your minority never gets promoted. /They don't say that, they just "require community participation" and lo/behold/etc.
