The work culture at rich tech companies (people read something upsetting in the news and want to discuss and 'process' it on company time) is so alien from most people's experience of work that it makes me despair for ever finding common ground with the actual working class

Construction work is segregated like many other things. There are the worker workers, whose productivity is measured and squeezed, and the manager or quasi-manager class who are all cishet white men, and they have free time.

I might just be a soft tech worker but I was under the impression that a lot of trades work involved a lot of standing around waiting and shooting the shit because things go over schedule and you can't start shit until the other person finishes.

It’s not as big a deal because the asphalt road they paved doesn’t then proceed to normalize fascism and xenophobia to everyone who drives over it.

I am tempted to tally up the hours spent talking vs doing on the construction site outside my window. I'm confident I could spend a whole day doing that and still beat their numbers overall for the week.
