Maybe I'm not understanding you fully, then. In my eyes it seems like a Facebook version of a "state of emergency", which just reintroduces the governance problem. The fact that the "more friction" is in irreconcilable tension with the business model also seems like bad news

100% agree that when and how Facebook declares a state of emergency is opaque and problematic (wrote abt that here! https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/04/pandemic-facebook-and-twitter-grab-more-power/610213/ …). Couldn't fit that all into a single op-ed. But BTGs are a content-neutral way of addressing some of the most harmful parts of the platform
