I think that's part of the fantasy. There might be a different set of salient ones and it's not obvious to me that they'd be in the direction of Scandinavian social democracy and great high-speed rail

I don't see how the worst bits of American conservatism could survive if they had to appeal to a broader population. The national platform would 100% have to change and that will itself drag some politicians to the left. Obviously i'm not talking "scandinavian utopia", but ...

there are enough really bad things (thinly veiled racist policies, extreme/absolute bans on abortion, homophobic and transphobic laws) they do right now that just wouldn't fly when it'd be targeting people they need to court, or at least people who are sympathetic to those groups
