That's not the thing, though. I'm interested in the phenomenon where a hobby is pursued beyond the point of enjoyment. We've all experienced it (like grinding in a video game). This may or may not be an example; I don't know that particular community. But the phenomenon is fun

I guess I don’t see the evidence that people aren’t enjoying themselves doing this. Anyway, I also don’t exactly think “enjoyment” is or should always be the point of a hobby. Grinding a video game is one thing, but many activities can be tough but meaningful.
