This is one of my favorite displays of human nature. We built fantasy software that lets you fly anywhere, and people are using it to roleplay the highly restrictive world of commercial aviation, for free. All modern hobbies specialize to become unpaid work. Fun is for noobshttps://twitter.com/lemonodor/status/1386341094359666689 …

VATSIM's "Cross the Pond" event was yesterday, where more than 1900 pilots flew simulated transoceanic flights from Europe to the U.S., with air traffic control enthusiasts providing sim ATC the whole way. I remember reading on a coffee forum once how some person always orders a ristretto, not because they enjoy it, but because that is the ultimate test of the barista's skills. There's similar phenomena in every hobby. You get the 1,000,000 SHU hot sauce or the "difficult" claret

Reminds of this video arguing most rules & enforcement in sports are kinda arbitrary because the rules are just a framework to do things in, to create challenges and fun. Now people are just appropriating rules written for other reasons to have funhttps://youtu.be/eTfm03T3VAE

Or, alternatively, there's nothing social about doing whatever you want, and people enjoy the social aspect of hobbies.

People play truck driving games or farm simulators for living.... people pay to watch those streams. And they have real steering wheels, all dashboards with real knobs......

This is one of my favorite displays of human nature. Any activity that doesn’t seem like fun to someone not participating can’t possibly be fun for those doing it and must instead be evidence of some sort of decline.

That's not the thing, though. I'm interested in the phenomenon where a hobby is pursued beyond the point of enjoyment. We've all experienced it (like grinding in a video game). This may or may not be an example; I don't know that particular community. But the phenomenon is fun
