The Spratly Islands are claimed by six countries and have a history of human settlement going back 50,000 years. I can't believe no one has exploited this to pose as a native and write a Bildungsroman. Their acronym would be a mile long and they'd get all the writing fellowships
The easiest solution seems to be to make the South China Sea much deeper. Luckily global warming has got our back on this

Actual answer is that I think the situation is hopeless absent a major change in Chinese policy. There is no place right now for ambiguity and the weird geography of this place demands it
