That doesn't really sound like a good faith argument. I think you're saying "unless we turn of mail-in ballots, then we have more vulnerabilities", but that's not true - malicious disruptions to the postal service would still allow other forms of voting.

Lot of "consider a spherical voter of radius R" energy here

I don't know, Matt said "You're strictly increasing the amount of vulnerability", that seems worth addressing. There are attacks that are no longer possible, so it's not true... right?

Vulnerability here extends out into non-technical domains like people's general confidence in elections being fair. Elections are not a technical problem but a general social consensus, and adding apps to the mix adds layers of serious risk even if they were provably error-free.

Naturally, but the paper - cited by Matt - says that malware is the greatest threat, not non-technical domains. I'm saying that the threat from malware is overblown. That said, there are still other good arguments against it.

Did you even bother to read the section that contains that sentence? It doesn't sound like you did. Again, if you want to learn about elections security, the NASEM report is an excellent reference. But you have to actually read it.

Yes, I did read it. My conclusion is that the authors - while clearly qualified to comment on many aspects of security and elections - are less familiar with this topic.

You are literally typing at someone who has injected malware into an electronic voting system. It is, in fact, the greatest threat to current systems. The report is absolutely correct about this.

I'm glad you've experienced injecting some malware, but that's like boasting to a professional chef that you cooked an omelette once. This is a huge complicated field.

I'm sure you would have done a better job than I did. You're a very smart man. Happy? It is absolutely correct to observe that malware is perhaps the greatest threat to electronic voting systems. It is the primary threat that mechamisms like RLAs protect against.

Clearly the way to resolve this is a hack-off. The Albanian parliamentary election takes place on April 25. Whichever one of you is Prime Minister of Albania on May 1 wins this nerdfight.

I suggest they use Estonia as the stage for this since they've been voting over the Internet since 2005. Russia has never had a beef with Estonia, so they haven't had any real cyberthreats ever. Should be a piece of cake, right?
