The way that Twitter has memory-holed Donald Trump's twitter history—including preventing the National Archives from posting their own archive of the president's account—is deeply troubling.https://www.politico.com/news/2021/04/07/twitter-national-archives-realdonaldtrump-479743 …

Orwell envisioned a cumbersome system that required hand gardening of archives to keep them in ideological compliance, but in the online world, large portions of history can be deleted or edited by machine. This is a complementary issue to that of censorship or deplatforming

As someone who pushed hard to get Trump's account closed in 2017, I commend
@jack for finding the most damaging possible way to handle the situation—letting the guy use the site for incitement during his entire term, and then deleting the historical record.Show this thread

not trying to be snarky, but were there ever any important comments under his tweets? like comments that impacted national security or fed govt. actions?

Wasn't Trump required to keep copies of his tweets independent of whatever Twitter did? After all, if the President sends a written letter to someone that person isn't required to keep copies of the letter.

The issue is not just the tweets themselves, but the context around them (news articles with embedded tweets that now lead nowhere, comment threads, quote tweets, all that stuff)
