yeah, as soon as I started writing the question, I was pretty sure the answer was something like this. Definitely feel like there's an engineering solution that could (have) be(en) created (given time to plan ahead) that is nimble & capable. An inclined plane comes to mind ;-)

Also there was a study from the National Research Council and the Naval Studies Board about sea basing and although they looked at 20ft TEUs they dismissed even a theoretical upgraded Sikorsky CH-53X. Lifting loaded 40ft TUEs is far beyond what choppers can do.
