Yahoo Pipes was way far ahead of its time. Visual programming workflows, built on the web of 2007. That's 153 years ago.pic.twitter.com/DZ4XsER8CQ

The genius of @pashasadri (also creator of @Polyvore), JS wiz Jonathan Trevor, @danielraffel, @k, Paul Hammond (@Slack), and @pinboard. Oh Yahoo 😂

@mrdonut Great to know all the amazing folks involved. Did Pipes use @natekoechley's YUI CSS framework? I used that non-stop for a few years, and loved it.

If I recall, we used YUI’s JS libraries as a foundation. Nate’s team was awesome and great help when it came to our wild JS projects. Then everything else for the Pipes editor was custom JS by Jonathan.

Y! Pipes launched at the peak of "Web Services" era. After Amazon pivoted to IaaS, what are some reasons, if I may, do you think leaders at Y! and its idea centers like Brickhouse not give that a go? Esp since it was reported that Bartz was hired to do so: https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424053111904537404576555250572211010 …

Brickhouse was a wank center, not an idea center. As for Pipes, from my perspective it was doomed the second Yahoo! Legal (where dreams go to die) ruled that we could not cache RSS feeds, making the product useless for most interesting applications

There were all sorts of filters and if/then triggers and so on in Pipes, but without a reservoir of cached feeds, if you stacked more than one or two of them together, you'd get no output. It made it impossible to test or play with stuff

As someone who built a toy web search on top of BOSS in 2008, I so wanted to work at Y! but unfortunately didn't have enough GPA credits to get past the filters (the same summer AWS took me in). Regardless, YDN introduced the power of the Web to many and inspired a generation.
