Hey, there's an article about subscription fatigue in the Wall Street Journal that mentions Pinboard! Ironically, I can't read it because I cancelled my WSJ subscription (which required filing a dispute with my bank, as WSJ makes it impossible to cancel)https://www.wsj.com/articles/subscriptions-are-getting-out-of-hand-heres-how-to-manage-them-11616331601 …

You lose a lot more repeat customers by asking them explicitly to renew, rather than charging them automatically at the end of the period, but given the level of scamminess in auto-renewing subscriptions (the Wall Street Journal among the worst offenders) I feel I have no choice

In theory, you can unsubscribe from the Wall Street Journal by calling them. In practice, they are not reachable by phone—you'll be on hold forever. But they must be very used to credit card disputes; as soon as you file one you get a nice letter saying you've been unsubscribed.

Anyway, if that article says Pinboard is bad or overpriced, ignore it. Fake news! But if it says Pinboard is great and the ten year plan is a phenomenal value, boy is it right.

People signing up for a 10 year plan is mentioned, although not your surprise. (I can see the article, dunno why.) Apparently I signed up for 6 years on my last go, and 5 years in I feel pretty good about the money I paid. I’ll probably buy something similar come next January.

I guess I don’t really think of myself as “subscribed” to Pinboard (and actually had to check when you started sending out emails). It feels like the ‘old’ way of buying software, and every few years I buy the next ‘major’ version (which is the same as previous, it’s great).

I did because I've been using Pinboard for 10 years already but...I also got a permanent LJ account back in the day so I'm not entirely sure what that says...

Was going to go for the 10 year option (for the hassle reason), but felt the price per year was getting ridiculously low, so opted for the five-year one :-)

For most things (especially Patreons/substacks by independent dudes) I've almost always started going for yearly instead of monthly payments

I bought a 10-year subscription, because the cost of that plus the one-time price I paid 10 years ago, divided by the 10 years I’ve relied on it, equals a fair price for those years. Going forward I’m freeloading again

Thank you for that!
