Oh mighty lazyweb, I want to get a small tower server for home NAS that can run ubuntu / Pinboard and hold a couple of hard disks. Above all, it should be whisper quiet. The moral equivalent of a Mac mini (and if necessary I'll get that). Do you have any recommendations?

An Intel NUC is a Mac Mini for Linux; we all use them for testbed stuff.

I think you want the NUC 10 (because it exists today) so “NUC10” part numbers, and then you want a KIT, not a “mini-PC”, because you’re buying RAM (laptop-style SODIMM) separately to get >16G — so FNH or FNK. The FNH has a SATA slot. Then pick i7 or i5.

As you can see they really did a bang-up job marketing these. Buy a NUC10i[57]FN[HK], an M.2 NVMe drive, and 2 32-G DD4 SODIMMS.
