Chirp! Chirp! It's #DaylightSavingTime Change your smoke alarm batteries this weekend!pic.twitter.com/lwuwqei2YR

A purple bus covered in smoke alarms and clocks flying through the space-time continuum. The text reads: Hurray! It's the daylight saving time smoke-alarm-time-machine-bus! Chirp! Chirp! Time is a social construct! Change your smoke alarm batteries this weekend! Replace your smoke alarm every 10 years!

Why do you want to contribute to unnecessary environmentally unfriendly waste? When was the last time a smoke detector was sold without a low battery indicator chirp?

Because a stand-alone smoke alarm with a completely dead battery won’t emit a warning chirp, which is why fire departments recommend testing them and replacing the batteries at least twice a year. Smoke alarms with non replaceable 10 year batteries still should be tested.

If you want to reduce battery waste, get the newer 10year sealed detectors. (All smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, because that’s the lifetime of the sensors).

Whatever minimal environmental harm from reminding people to regularly ensure older smoke detectors are in good working order needs to be weighed against other important goals, like helping people not die in fires. Newer smoke detectors don’t use replaceable batteries.

Are they easier to remove from the wall and put in a drawer? That's the main feature I look for.
