Oh mighty lazyweb, I want to get a small tower server for home NAS that can run ubuntu / Pinboard and hold a couple of hard disks. Above all, it should be whisper quiet. The moral equivalent of a Mac mini (and if necessary I'll get that). Do you have any recommendations?

Do you want diy or pre assembled? The coolermaster elite 110 does what you ask but might be bigger than you want. My DIY NAS uses it and is whisper quiet https://jmtd.net/hardware/phobos/ …

That looks super neat! My one concern is that I need to be able to run it as a Linux server, too, with at least 48 GB memory (so I can do Pinboard staging stuff on there). Can it hold that much RAM?

Yeah definitely not for that mainboard

The overlapping part in the venn diagram between “48GB of RAM” and “small and quiet” has got to be tiny. Good luck!

Not anymore, you can get nucs and laptops with 64gb so form factor isn't an issue

I just built a NAS into a Fractal Node 304 https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/node/node-304/black/ … It takes a mini itx motherboard and holds six drives. It uses a full size ATX psu though, so the cable management is a little bit fiddly. ITX boards usually have 2 slots so you could run 64gb ram

I considered that case too. It's approx the same dimensions as the CoolerMaster Elite 110 (which max 3-4 3.5" drives), perhaps slightly bigger. I've seen one in person, and it's pretty; haven't used one though.
