Based on the amount of money raised for candidates in the last 2 election cycles, I would guess that lifetime value of a donor identified through this advertising is very high, making the eye-popping upfront cost easily bearable.

@aoc to legislate and do the people's business that would otherwise be spent at fundraisers. The team executing this strategy on her behalf is sophisticated. Pause to look at the numbers thru lens of long term list acquisition. -
We've just seen some of the most sophisticated teams in US politics in 2020 burn through hundreds of millions of dollars for no result whatsoever, so the sophisticated strategy argument is less persuasive today. I'm sure Bloomberg and McGrath have amazing lists, for example.
