You're making the presumption that this isn't giving the militia types who've dreamed of civil war and overturning the rule by hippies and the NWO some real juice to try and push their agenda. When enough of a nation believes something, it changes history.

I think in that sense it is quite terrible, and the incitement to political violence (whether overt like Trump, or implicit) is real and inexcusable

How do you know that it’s cynical? How do you know that they didn’t intend to steal the election?

I see them failing, I don't see the lack of trying. What else would you like them to try? "It was all murder theater, your honor, my aim sucks, especially after I had a few, so I may have pulled the trigger while aiming I didn't manage to shoot the alleged victim."

Never take it seriously until it's too late to do anything about it.

What is a bona fide attempt, then?

Like, with each step, I see that we shouldn't be worried yet, that these actions _don't_ count. But everything I've read about fascism warns of the incrementalism and the important of setting out red lines for yourself ahead of time.

And if their attempt succeeded what do you think they'd do? Say "oh this was just theatre!" and let Biden take office? Of course not. Ergo it's a serious attempt.
-
This is like arguing if you dress up in a monocle and top hat pretending to be a millionaire, and then happen to find a bag with a million dollars, then you would take it. It is true but doesn't make the attempt any less unrealistic or performative

To use your metaphor, it's only theatre if all the people on stage are actors. If I get choked out by a couple people but you, a passerby, say "Oh no, that's part of play, they weren't assaulting you seriously, it's theatre!" - that doesn't magically make it not an assault
-
I think the real victim here is this metaphor
