Part of this is the problem of an imperial Presidency. There's no inherent reason that the President has to travel around in a 747 with motorcades and a military airlift of support personnel. The whole setup where if the President visits Buford, Idaho it has to be turned into a command post in case he decides to nuke someone that day is not healthy. Let the two oceans protecting this country, and the Constitutional assignment of war powers to Congress, do their job

Not sure I follow the logic. You're suggesting that the commander-in-chief not remain in contact with the military at all times? Was it a good thing that Dick Cheney hijacked the presidency on 9/11?
