Section 230 protects a lot of what remains of the open web from being ground to death by frivolous lawsuits, so the most likely 2021 outcome is a GDPR-like hellscape that strengthens the tech oligopoly it tries to regulate while driving the rest of us out of business

i sympathize with their sentiment but as someone who knows what a computer algorithm is, I foresee a lot of devils in those details that I suspect lawmakers do not.

I assume when they say "algorithm", they're thinking of fancy machine-learning algorithms trained to maximize engagement / magnify bias, not an algorithms like '(sort-by :shares posts)'
