I'm confused at the US political system's focus on fundraising. There's lots of "raise $$$ for this candidate", but I don't understand what then happens to that money. Do they just give it all to Facebook?
No, that's overall. A congressional district has 710K or so people in it and something like half of them will vote (in a presidential year).

Ohhhhh! I read "state race" and thought "that's a term I don't know!", so I immediately assumed that it was statewide, and that not many people actually vote. Thank you for clarifying!

Oh, my bad. There are two kinds of 'state races', some are statewide (like state auditor or attorney general) and some are for state house/senate districts. They can vary from a few thousand people to millions. But I have state house races on my mind.
